| 1. Leading Edge: |
Edge of the propeller closest to the boat. The
first edge to hit the water. |
| 2. Trailing Edge: |
Edge of the propeller furthest from the boat.
Last to go into the water. |
| 3. Blade Tip: |
The maximum reach of the blade from the center
of the hub. Separates leading and trailing edges. |
| 4. Blade Face: |
The side of the blade facing away from the boat. |
| 5. Blade Back: |
The side of the blade facing the boat. |
| 6. Blade Root: |
Where the blade meets the hub. |
| 7. Cup: |
Small curve located on the trailing edge of the
blade. |
| 8. Hub: |
Cylinder at the center of the propeller. Mounts
on the engine shaft. |
| 9. Diameter: |
Distance across the circle created by the blade
tips. |
| 10. Pitch: |
The distance that a propeller would move in a
linear direction with one revolution. |
| 11. Fixed Pitch: |
Permanently mounted blades that do not allow a
change in the propeller pitch. |
| 12. Constant Pitch: |
Blades have the same pitch from leading edge to
trailing edge and from root to blade tips. |
| 13. Variable Pitch: |
Blades have sections with varying degrees of
pitch on the blade face. |
| 14. Rake: |
Slant of a blade with respect to the line
perpendicular to the propeller's axis of rotation. |
| 15. Skew: |
Blades that are swept back |
| 16. Rotation: |
Right-hand propellers rotate clockwise for
forward thrust while left-hand propellers rotate counter-clockwise during
forward thrust. |
